NGTC Externship Fellows Program Welcomes Joseph Maestas

The Nebraska Governance and Technology Center (NGTC) is pleased to facilitate an Externship Fellows Program, the purpose of which is to assist University of Nebraska students in accepting externships in industry or government that will improve their understanding of the complex challenges presented by technology governance.

Recently, the Externship Fellows Program welcomed Joseph Maestas as our newest externship fellow. Joseph, who is pursuing a joint degree in Law and Political Science, has focused his research on global state activity, and the degree to which individual states are complying with their international treaty obligations. This interest has led him to accept an internship with the United Nations Mine Action Service, a service located within the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations that specializes in coordinating and implementing activities to limit the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war, and improvised explosive devices.

Maestas’s explained the work he will be doing with the UNMAS:

As a Political Affairs Intern with the UNMAS, I am doing research into treaties, such as the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty, Convention on Cluster Munitions, Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, and affected areas (particularly within member states). I am also attending meetings and events with Ambassadors and NGOs and other stakeholders to gain new information and to engage with both member states to the relevant treaties but also with non-members to understand their reluctance to join them.

The Nebraska Governance and Technology Center accepts applications for its Externship Fellows Program on an ongoing basis, and encourages interested students to apply.

The program is intended to help defray the cost of a student spending one academic semester (including summers) in an unpaid industry or government externship more than 100 miles from Lincoln, Nebraska.
